MUSEUM AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

"GREAT MUSEUMS really delivers! It's fun and elegant.... By airing GREAT MUSEUMS, we're increasing
viewer awareness of cultural opportunities in our own backyard
and that's a business that public television should be in."
Sharon Kirkpatrick, Program Manager, WLAE, New Orleans

GREAT MUSEUMS is an adventure of the mind and more! With nearly 15,000 museums in the United States today, many viewers can rediscover a lifelong love of learning through museums in their own backyards!

The GREAT MUSEUMS series is a high-profile centerpiece around which stations and local cultural institutions can design joint programs and activities to increase interest in the local cultural scene. Some of the ways that stations and museums can use this series to build a consistent audience for related television, museum and special event programming include:

  • GREAT MUSEUMS “Find the Museum in Your Backyard” Web Links
Email outreach@greatmuseums.org to connect your viewers to museums in your community. Our webmaster will link your website to your state or local museums.

  • VOCA Opportunity
Use the :30 VOCA opportunity to connect viewers to your local museums or to increase awareness about a special exhibit.  Suggested script:
  • “What’s in your backyard? Learn more about museum opportunities near you at www.your-station-website.

GREAT MUSEUMS Day for Public Television Members
Partner with local museums to create a special museum day, when station members/viewers can have discounted entry.

  • GREAT MUSEUMSClub
    Form a GREAT MUSEUMS
Club for your viewers to gather at home or at a screening room, to enjoy the show, engage in lively discussions sparked by the series’ themes, and plan group excursions to one of America’s great museums, nearby or far away!

  • GREAT MUSEUMS Screenings
Partner with a local museum, library or school to screen or premiere select episodes.  Invite local scholars to make a related presentation/lecture.

  • GREAT MUSEUMSSchool Re-Record Rights
Share GREAT MUSEUMSwith local educators – it’s a great resource for them.  Make sure local schools know about the free re-record rights for classroom use! (More information For Teachers)

A web-based Community Outreach Resources Guide for GREAT MUSEUMS is in development. In cooperation with the American Association of Museums’ Museums & Community Project, GREAT MUSEUMS is creating new opportunities for strengthened relationships between local public television and the local museum and cultural community.
